چکیده

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate electromyographic (EMG) activities of left and right anterior temporal, masseter, and anterior digastric muscles during resting, maximum voluntary clenching, and swallowing before and after facemask treatment. Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients with Class III malocclusion (mean age, 12.1 6 1.43 years) were included in this study. The patients were treated by means of facemask with miniplate anchorage after 8 weeks of alternate rapid maxillary expansion and constriction (Alt-RAMEC) protocol. Before and after treatment, EMG examinations during resting, maximum voluntary clenching, and swallowing were carried out on all subjects. Total treatment time was 9.9 6 2.63 months. Changes in the activities of right and left anterior temporal, masseter, and anterior digastric muscles were tested by using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The EMG activities of left and right anterior temporal, masseter, and anterior digastric muscles during resting, maximum voluntary clenching, and swallowing did not show any statistically significant changes after treatment (p..05). Conclusion: The EMG evaluation showed that facemask treatment with miniplate anchorage after the Alt-RAMEC protocol did not change the EMG activities of left and right anterior temporal, masseter, and anterior digastric muscles in patients with Class III malocclusion. Zygomatic miniplates for skeletal anchorage in orthopedic correction of Class III malocclusion: A controlled clinical trial

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of facemask therapy, which was anchored from the zygomatic buttresses of the maxilla by using two miniplates, in skeletal Class III patients with maxillary deficiency. METHODS Eighteen skeletal Class III patients (10 girls and 8 boys; mean age, 11.4 ± 1.28 years) with maxillary deficiency were treated using miniplate-anchored facemasks, and their outcomes wer...

Masticatory muscle pain before, during, and after treatment with orthopedic protraction headgear: a pilot study.

Protraction headgear has been used in conjunction with a palatal expansion appliance to correct Class III malocclusion with maxillary deficiency and/or mandibular prognathism. In general, 800 gm of orthopedic force is used to protract the maxilla, and 75% of this force is transmitted to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area via the mandible. The effect of this heavy intermittent force on the T...

مقایسه فعالیت عضلات ماضغه و گیجگاهی به وسیله الکترومیوگرافی در بیماران کلاس III اسکلتی

Electromyographic (EMG) investigations about the activities of the muscles have been the focus of attention for many years. In the field of orthodontics, investigators, among other things, tried to evaluate correlation between EMG activity, occlusal relationships and craniofacial morphology to analyze the effect of muscular activity, as an etiological factor in malocclusion. The purpose of the ...

Background and Aims: Skeletal class III malocclusions are considered as one of the most complex and difficult orthodontic problems to diagnose and treat. Facial appearance and occlusion problems make the patients to seek treatment as soon as possible. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of early treatment with facemask compared to the patients who had no treatment. Materials ...

Treatment Approach for Maxillary Hypoplasia in Cleft Patients: Class III Elastics with Skeletal Anchorage (Report of Two Cases)

Introduction: Treatment ofcleft lip and palate patients requires a multidisciplinary plan. These patients usually have a hypoplastic maxilla due to the prior surgical scars. Orthognathic surgery to advance the maxilla in these patients is not very efficient; therefore, orthopedic interventions during an appropriate age seems to be essential.   Case Report: In this article, two cleft lip and pa...
